Grapevine Events: Regnboginn Opening, Spacestation Christmas Acoustic Concert, Kárahátíð 2.o

8 min

Sometimes, it feels like we’re a broken record, telling you each week that the weather is bad, but there are still events to go to. This week is no different: it’s been rainy and windy, but nevertheless, there are great events happening this weekend. Let’s see what’s going on.

At 16:00, the School of Photography’s Graduation Exhibition opens at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography. Four students, who are completing their diplomas in Creative Photography, will present their work, which will be on display until January 11.

This evening at 21:00, SYKUR & Inspector Spacetime come together for “Jólafrí,” a Christmas-break party filled with bubbly pop in Austurbæjarbíó. There are still some tickets, so if you’re thinking about it, check it out before it’s too late! Concurrently, starting at 22:00, beloved band Retro Stefson takes over Prikið in anticipation of their huge concert on December 30. Prikið will be a decidedly smaller venue than their upcoming N1 Höllin stage, so let’s see how they (and their fans) take to the smaller space.

On Saturday at 16:00, Gallery Port expands its annual Jólagestir exhibition to the gallery’s second location, on the upper floor of Rammagerðin (Laugavegur 31). From 15:00-19:00, Garg bookstore hosts a “Jólatombóla,” where they promise a beautiful array of art and books in their raffle (where all proceeds go directly back into the Garg community), readings, and holiday cheer.

Saturday night, Kaktus Einarsson is Straumur’s weekly guest at Kaffibarinn — part of their series that is always free, always at 21:00.

Regnboginn Opening Party

December 12 — 20:00 — Bío Paradís — Buy a drink and a movie ticket!

Bíó Paradís always hits it out of the park with their holiday programming: from Love Actually and Home Alone to Die Hard and E.T. What’s more, Bíó Paradís is opening a brand-new cocktail bar, Regnboginn. To celebrate this new addition, Bíó Paradís welcomes all to try their new cocktails, see performances from dj tatjana and Lottó, and even has special gifts for the first to arrive. Does this mean you’ll be able to take a cocktail into the screening room? We certainly think so. IZ & ISH

A Visitor Center will Open – (Urriðafoss 1928 – ?)

December 13 — 14:00-17:00 — Á Milli

At Á Milli, artist Agnes Ársælsdóttir and curator Odda Júlía Snorradóttir present the exhibition A Visitor Center will Open – (Urriðafoss 1928 – ?). Urriðafoss is a waterfall in Iceland which has the highest water flow of any in the country, and second highest in all of Europe. While plans for a powerplant that harnesses the hydroelectric power of the waterfall are on the table, residents of the area have protesting against the construction, as the waterfall would likely disappear if the powerhouse were built. In this exhibition, the artist “explores the aesthetic qualities of the power plant landscape, how the history of landscape transformation is preserved, and how it is communicated.” ISH

Spacestation Christmas Acoustic Concert + Iðunn Einars

December 13 — 20:00 — Mengi — 2.990 ISK

Fresh off their European tour, the town’s hottest indie-post-punk-shoegaze boy band, Spacetation, is playing a gig on home turf at one of our favourite venues, Mengi. This will be their final official concert of the year — and an unusual one at that. Instead of taking off their shirts, stomping their feet, and banging their heads, the band will perform an acoustic set by candlelight. Opening for the boys is Iðunn Einars, whom you can also catch solo at Mengi in January. IZ

Kárahátíð 2.o

December 13 — 13:00-01:00 — Kabarett — 4.000 ISK or pay what you can/want

Spider Network’s annual hurrah, Kárahátíð, is happening this year at the newly-opened venue Kabarett! The collective has been known for getting interesting artists out of the woodwork to experiment with noise, and this year is no different: their line-up includes artist Amanda Riffo, techno trio ex.girls, pianist Magnús Jóhann, and… Cristiano Ronaldo? With a twelve-hour schedule (that’s not a typo!), check out this year’s celebration of noise and Kári. ISH
